Old Picture Filter (Effect)

Using an old photo effect is very popular in social media and among photography enthusiasts. The concept is to transmit that vintage photo effect despite of picture been shot recently.

The aim of this tutorial is to modify the color, tone, and overall mood of the photo. What I mean is that I will help you create that “vintage photo editing” style or look and not the aged, stained, and creased paper look.

How to create a vintage photo effect in Luminar Neo

The workflow of a vintage photo editing process is very simple. You will need to focus only in five things:

Contrast: Old photos tend to be low in contrast, so we will be reducing contrast to a point that it looks faded enough.
Saturation: Apart from lowering contrast, de-saturation is another trait of an old photo style. Typically, you will want to desaturate the photo completely to black and white.
Film grain: film noise or grain was always present on pictures shot in the old times. We will add a touch of this effect to the photo.
White balance: This is, in my opinion, the most important adjustment. In this tutorial I will adjust the white balance toward the warm/yellow side because I want to display the yellowish color cast of the chemicals used during developing.
Vignette: In this tutorial I used black vignette, but if you like a white fade vignette will also work.
